The Dash Poem
I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of his friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning...to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth… and now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own; the cars…the house…the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard… are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left. That can still be rearranged
If we could just slow down enough to consider what’s true and real, and always try to understand the way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger, and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile… remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy’s being read with your life’s actions to rehash... would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent your dash?

From the Facebook page: Saddened this morning to learn of another BHS Class of 90 classmate that we lost a few years ago. Roberto “Albie” Edwards passed away in St. Petersburg in April 18, 2014 at age 41 (this Thursday would have been his 45th birthday). Albie was in Drama, Forensics, and was an athletic trainer at BHS. After graduation, Albie joined the Army, and served in the Persian Gulf War. He was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield. After leaving the Army, Albie lived for a while in Jacksonville before returning to the Tampa area. Many friends who knew him well said that he was famous for great hugs. He was active in the choir at Palm Lake Christian Church. Albie was laid to rest in a military funeral at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. This makes 14 classmates that I am officially aware that we have lost. Please take a moment today to think of Albie.

Randy Short 2019: Several weeks ago, I was reaching out to people to confirm addresses for the upcoming BHS 30th reunion, and when I messaged Randy Slavens (Short), she messaged me back and told me that she was in the care of hospice with terminal breast cancer. My heart sank. She was one of the nicest people I had ever known at BHS. Randy passed away on September 20th, just seventeen days after her 47th birthday. She leaves behind two daughters and her husband (and high school sweetheart), Dale Slavens. I am planning on heading up an event in memory of Randy - “Relays for Randy”, where we can each individually and as a class, raise money for her family. More details to come soon, please DM me if you’d like to help with the planning.
